Last March 2010, Magaling Ang Pinoy! Ateneo’s Filipino Family Best Practices Study in Marikina and Bulacan Public Schools was awarded the Scholarly Work with Most Social Impact. The award was received by Pathways to Higher Education’s staunch supporters co-authors of the finalist for the National Book Awards, Dr. Queena Lee-Chua, Ma. Maribel Dionisio and Nerisa C. Fernandez.

It takes a village to raise a child, so they say. And the family is the foundation of that village. The parents play a vital role in their children’s growth, achievements and their future. But before 2007, there were very little literature on Filipino parenting, especially its relation to the child’s academic performance.

In February 2007, Dr. Queena Lee-Chua, Ma. Maribel Dionisio and Nerisa C. Fernandez, launched their book Magaling ang Pinoy! Ateneo’s Filipino Family Best Practices Study in Marikina and Bulacan Public Schools. Together with a team of Ateneo parent volunteers, they conducted a study to identify the parenting techniques practiced by parents of student achievers.

In just a few months, Magaling ang Pinoy (MAP) evolved into a full-blown training program. First launched in Marikina city as the Galing MCF Program (Galing Mother-Father-Child), more parents were trained as the MAP team shared the results of the study. After a successful run in Marikina, Pathways to Higher Education and volunteer parents simplified and condensed the book to bring the message of MAP to more parents. In August 2008, the ABaKaDa ng Pagiging Mabuting Magulang (the ABCs of Parenting) was launched in Quezon City.

In a span of 2 years, Pathways to Higher Education and its volunteer parents have been able to spread the message of Magaling ang Pinoy to 2,500 parents all over Metro Manila, with the help of enthusiastic schools and local government.

The Scholarly Work with Most Social Impact recognizes sound scholarly work that makes a distinct difference in addressing socio-civic and national development concerns.

Congratulations Dr. Queena Lee Chua, Nesy Fernandez and Maribel Dionisio!
