Galing MCF program for parents launched

One factor that affects a student’s educational achievement is family. Parents play an influential role in children’s school performance. But literature on Filipino parenting styles and its connection to student academic achievement has been sparse in the Philippines.

Parent facilitator Maribel Dionisio talks to one of the parent participants during the Galing MCF training program.

This is what the book, Magaling ang Pinoy tackles. Dr. Queena Lee Chua, Ma. Maribel Dionisio and Nesy Fernandez, together with a team of Ateneo parent volunteers conducted a study to identify the parenting techniques practiced by parents of student achievers.

Parent participants are given their time to share their thoughts about the Galing MCF program.

Taking the project further, the group partnered with Pathways to Higher Education- Ateneo de Manila University and with the Department of Education of Marikina. Aimed at relaying the information to its beneficiaries, Ateneo parent trainors are doing the rounds in Marikina’s public schools to share the results of the study to other parents. Dubbed as, “Galing MCF” or Galing Mother-Child-Father, the project was launched last October 9, 2007 in Sentrong Pangkultura, Marikina City.

Pathways hopes that this project will enable more students to excel in school. To view more photos of Community Development activities, you may visit the Community Development Multiply site.
